Stappert explains Yamaha Pertamina Indonesia ambitions

Wednesday, 23 April 2008

According to the Yamaha Pertamina Indonesia team they simply want 250cc rookie Doni Tata Pradita to qualify for and finish races this season, so the 18 year-old is not going far wrong after three rounds of his first full World Championship season.

Undertaking a first full campaign on the World stage in 2008, Doni Tata Pradita is battling against more seasoned competitors on faster machinery, but the Indonesian youngster is doing a good job so far.

Although yet to score a World Championship point the Asian teenager came close in Qatar and at Jerez where he finished 17th and 16th respectively, while in Estoril he again completed the race, in 19th place, having never even tested at the Portuguese track.

Before this season Pradita had only made Grand Prix wildcard appearances in Malaysia as a 125cc competitor in 2005 and 2006 and as a 250cc rider in 2007, and his main task this year is simply to gain as much experience of the additional MotoGP circuits as possible – according to Yamaha Pertamina Indonesia´s Dieter Stappert.

On Pradita´s season to date, Stappert commented, `It is a bit of a struggle because the Yamaha bike is not really the most competitive machinery and Doni is not experienced. He doesn´t know any of the circuits.´

`At Estoril it was the first circuit where we really had to battle to qualify, because we had tested at Qatar and Jerez so it was no problem to qualify there. He has to do as many laps as possible, but it is just a case of little step by little step.´

Explaining the dynamics in the Yamaha 250cc satellite team´s pit-box the Team Manager continued, `We have one mechanic who has looked after Doni for the past couple of years and he is like a bridge between Doni and us. But Doni speaks quite good English and within the team we get along well.´

Speaking earnestly about the team´s aims for the season, Stappert revealed simply, `We hope to qualify for every race, finish every race and get as much experience as we can. If you look at the timesheets we are about two and a half to three seconds (per lap) behind the guys in front of us, the regular riders, so we can beat wildcards. Our ambition must be to close the time gap to the front group continually and I think that is the only way we can measure success.´

`In the race if seven or eight people drop out in front of us for technical reasons we might even get a championship point, but that is quite far away from us.´
